Here is a narrative painting that I did for my Beginning Painting class. It was based on my childhood memories of growing up and navigating life with autism through visual thinking. It was inspired by Kandinsky and Pablo Picasso, who were the great modernist artists of the early 20th century. It represents patterns, colors, and shapes through checkerboards, zigzags, and gradients, a metaphor of geometry, a subject I struggled with. I added some numbers, which present the difficulty I had in understanding them, a difficulty I overcame through thinking logically. Then, the filmstrip was used to project some images and symbols inside the brain, such as the rainbow infinity symbol representing neurodiversity, and the Greek word Psi symbolizing psychology, as autism is a neurological condition. The math symbols are multiplication, addition, division, and subtraction, used in calculation, a big factor in my dyscalculia. The gradient background of warmer colors of orange and yellow represents sun rays that give hope as a opportunity to bring in equality for kids and adults with physical and mental differences to live a normal life in a neurotypical society.
