Artist's Statement

20201201-IMG_8748_edited.jpg

My art expresses my childhood memories of watching cartoons in order to navigate the effects of my autism. I wish to achieve joy, hope, and inclusion in my life. My first influence was Madeline, which was written and illustrated by Ludwig Bemelmans. Other influences were Batman The Animated Series and the DC animated universe created by Bruce Timm in the 1990’s. In turn followed Butch Hartman the creator of the Fairly Odd Parents, Mr. Warburton who created Codename Kids Next Door, Gennady Tatarvorsky, the creator of Dexter’s Laboratory. Finally, Looney Tunes which was created by Chuck Jones for Warner Bros., the classic standard. For example, Harley Quinn made an impact on DC comics which had a simple style for superhero cartoons in the 1990s.

These animators, writers and creators made an impact on my animation work. My dream is in part to help people with disabilities to achieve happiness through the power of visual thinking. By doing thus, art and film can rise to communicate the world that we are living in.

I express my connection to art and animated films to the stories I create. Many are about characters being outcasts who are rejected by society. Take Eli for example, he really learns how to change to make it better for people to forgive him in order to be better accepted as one of them. The idea here is the value of accommodation. This mindset can open the doors to opportunity for disabled artists and animators to be in the mainstream entertainment industry.

Despite the broad changes in how programing is produced, the established venue of Television/ Cable is no longer the sole avenue of distribution. The digital world of the internet and cellular technology have brought countless channels for expression and if we are lucky a bit of enlightenment.
